10 Interesting Facts About Teeth

Teeth are an essential part of our bodies,

But, they are also fascinating in their own right. Here are 10 interesting facts about teeth that you may not know:

  1. Humans have two sets of teeth. The first set, called baby teeth or milk teeth, starts to come in around 6 months old. The second set, called adult teeth, starts to come in around 6 years old. Most people have 20 baby teeth and 32 adult teeth.
  2. Teeth are the hardest substance in the human body. Tooth enamel is made up of minerals that are harder than bone. However, enamel is also very brittle, so it can be easily damaged if it is not taken care of properly.
  3. The average person spends about 38 days brushing their teeth in their lifetime. That’s a lot of brushing! It’s important to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time to remove plaque and bacteria.
  4. People who grind their teeth at night are called bruxers. Bruxism can damage teeth and cause headaches. If you think you might be a bruxer, talk to your dentist.
  5. The longest human tooth ever recorded was 3.2 centimeters long. That’s about the size of a baby carrot! The tooth belonged to a man in Singapore who had to have it removed because it was causing him pain.
  6. Teeth can change color over time. This is usually due to factors such as diet, smoking, and medications. If you are concerned about the color of your teeth, talk to your dentist about whitening treatments.
  7. Some people are born with extra teeth. This condition is called hyperdontia. It is usually harmless, but it can sometimes cause problems with chewing and speaking.
  8. Teeth can be used to identify people. The unique shape and pattern of our teeth can be used to identify us, just like fingerprints. This is why dentists often take impressions of our teeth when we get our driver’s licenses or passports.
  9. The first toothbrush was made from twigs. People used to chew on the ends of twigs to fray them, then use them to brush their teeth. Toothbrushes made from animal hair were invented in China around 1498.
  10. The average person smiles about 15 times a day. That’s a lot of smiling! Smiling is a great way to show happiness and to connect with others.
