How Do I Know If I Have Gum Disease?

Symptoms of gum disease include red, swollen gums, and bleeding gums. The first stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, is indicated by bleeding gums during routine hygiene tasks like brushing and flossing. In advanced stages of gum disease, you may experience receding gums and shift or loosening teeth. It’s vital that you treat your gum disease as quickly as possible to prevent further damage to your oral health. Otherwise, you could be facing tooth or bone loss. Be sure to see your dentist regularly to avoid the development of gum disease, and be sure to make an appointment as soon as you notice any signs of the disease. A dentist will be able to diagnose the issue and provide appropriate treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

You may be wondering if you’re even a candidate for LANAP® treatment. If so, the team at Northwood Dental is here to help. Our LANAP®-certified clinician can help you assess whether LANAP® laser gum surgery is the right gum disease treatment for you. This treatment option is an excellent choice for:

  • Anyone who has been diagnosed with periodontal disease may be a candidate for laser gum surgery.
  • Patients who have medical conditions that would preclude or discourage them from having traditional surgery.
  • Patients who have had an alternative gum disease treatment in the past without success may benefit from laser gum surgery.
The reason LANAP® treatment is so successful is due in part to the rules of physics and the unique interaction between the gum tissue and the specialized laser used during the procedure. The wavelength of the laser targets the diseased gum tissue without harming the healthy tissue in the same area. This laser light is powerful enough to penetrate beyond the surface of the gums by 4 millimeters, effectively killing any bacteria hiding inside or underneath the gums. Once all of the bacteria has been eradicated, the laser creates a clot that will aid in healing.

LANAP® laser gum surgery requires two sessions, each lasting two hours. Northwood Dental begins each session by administering a local anesthetic to keep the patient comfortable throughout the procedure. Most patients can return to work and resume normal activities the next day. You can expect the following steps leading up to and during your LANAP® treatment:

  • We will measure the pocket depth with a probe to assess loss before laser gum surgery.
  • Pulsed laser light removes diseased tissue from the pocket, targeting only diseased tissue for gum disease treatment.
  • Ultrasonic scalers are used to clean calculus from underneath the gum line as part of the gum disease treatment.
  • The FDA approved treatment protocol stimulates new bone growth and True Regeneration® of tissue attachment.
  • The laser is then used to stimulate a clot, sealing the area around the teeth to promote healing after laser gum surgery.
  • Lastly, the traumatic areas where the teeth are biting too hard are balanced to allow a gentle healing.
  • A soft diet is recommended to be followed at home.
Once you complete the two LANAP® treatment sessions, you will be required to visit your dentist regularly so they can check on your progress. The gum tissues around your teeth may have a slight discoloration, and you’ll likely be required to wear splints around unstable teeth. These splints are meant to immobilize teeth and are very important to healing, so it’s important that you wear them as directed and return for your follow-up appointments. It’s important to remember these tips in the first few days following your procedure:
  • Don’t brush or floss your teeth for the first 7 to 10 days after your LANAP® treatment.
  • Eat only a soft diet as directed by your dentist. Hard or crunchy foods can cause damage and pain.
  • Refrain from smoking, as this habit interferes with the healing process.
